NEC Communication History/Milestones

At NEC, we have been delivering innovation for over 118 years. We were originally founded as a joint venture between Western Electric and Nippon Electric Corporation. This was the first joint venture of its kind between a US and Japanese company. Later, we officially changed our name to NEC. NEC has both a rich history of innovation and a strong set of partnerships that allow us to uniquely focus on solving some of society’s biggest challenges. Some of those innovations and milestones include:

  • Developing the first Public Branch Telephone System (PBX) in 1927
  • First to test Microwave Multiplex Communications in 1944
  • NEC has now been in North America over 50 Years
  • Development of the Earth Simulator to project the effects of global climate changes in 1997
  • Discovery of single walled carbon nanotubes now used in bicycle components, wind turbines and marine parts and have potential uses in solar cells, paper batteries, and various medical devices
